You didn't debunk ****. You danced around it, dismissed it as unimportant, when the fact is..tarriffs were the singlemost formidable reason for the seccession.
Yeah, sorry, taxes are taxes and they are necessary.

Popular opinion held that the government needed some of the money from your "fruits and vegetables" (which was really mostly tobacco) just like popular opinion held that the south was in huge violation of human rights.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

See my above post.

Well, that pretty well ends any RATIONAL arguments.

The absurd is sure to continue to come forth from southerners who will "re-interpret" their own history. (And blame it on carpetbaggers) :untrue:

interesting how much of that document dealt directly with slavery, yet of course slavery (and slave based economy) had nothing to do with the war.

Interesting how they fiercely protect their right to fly the stars and bars but its not because they are racists.

of course not. it's an expression of their individuality and freedom. a need to be viewed within a particular group who all collectively want to be indentified as "rebels". :zdunce:

absolute undeniable proof on the issue of slavery and the civil war presented by the "rebs" themselves:

South Carolina's Address to the Slaveholding States

Citizens of the slaveholding States of the United States, circumstances beyond our control have placed us in the van of the great controversy between the Northern and Southern States. We would have preferred that other States should have assumed the position we now occupy. Independent ourselves, we disclaim any design or desire to lead the councils of the other Southern States. Providence has cast our lot together, by extending over us an identity of pursuits, interests, and institutions. South Carolina desires no destiny separated from yours. To be one of a great slaveholding confederacy, stretching its arms over a territory larger than any Power in Europe possesses -- with population four times greater than that of the whole United States when they achieved their independence of the British Empire -- with productions which make our existence more important to the world than that of any other people inhabiting it -- with common institutions to defend, and common dangers to encounter -- we ask your sympathy and confederation. While constituting a portion of the United States, it has been your statesmanship which has guided it in its mighty strides to power and expansion. In the field, as in the Cabinet, you have led the way to its renown and grandeur. You have loved the Union, in whose service your great statesmen have labored, and your great soldiers have fought and conquered -- not for the material benefits it conferred, but with the faith of a generous and devoted chivalry. You have long lingered and hoped over the shattered remains of a broken Constitution. Compromise after compromise, formed by your concessions, has been trampled under foot by your Northern confederates. All fraternity of feeling between the North and the South is lost, or has been converted into hate; and we of the South are at last driven together by the stern destiny which controls the existence of nations. Your bitter experience of the faithlessness and rapacity of your Northern confederates may have been necessary to evolve those great principles of free government, upon which the liberties of the world depend, and to prepare you for the grand mission of vindicating and re- establishing them. We rejoice that other nations should be satisfied with their institutions. Self-complacency is a great element of happiness, with nations as with individuals. We are satisfied with ours. If they prefer a system of industry in which capital and labor are in perpetual conflict -- and chronic starvation keeps down the natural increase of population -- and a man is worked out in eight years -- and the law ordains that children shall be worked only ten hours a day -- and the sabre and bayonet are the instruments of order -- be it so. It is their affair, not ours. We prefer, however, our system of industry, by which labor and capital are identified in interest, and capital, therefore, protects labor; by which our population doubles every twenty years; by which starvation is unknown, and abundance crowns the land; by which order is preserved by unpaid police, and the most fertile regions of the world where the Caucasian cannot labor are brought into usefulness by the labor of the African, and the whole world is blessed by our own productions. All we demand of other peoples is to be let alone to work out our own high destinies. United together, and we must be the most independent, as we are the most important among the nations of the world. United together, and we require no other instrument to conquer peace than our beneficent productions. United together, and we must be a great, free and prosperous people, whose renown must spread throughout the civilized world, and pass down, we trust, to the remotest ages. We ask you to join us in forming a confederacy of Slaveholding States.

nice.

This is still going, huh? :clapping:
Here's my take on it: (again)
1.Slavery was NOT THE reason for the South to want to leave the Union. They wanted to control their own destinies and trade with whomever they wished without excessive tarriffs from the north. Slavery was dying there anyway due to increased mechanization. Machines cost much less to run than slaves.
2. Slavery was NOT the reason the north went to war to stop the South. The previous quote from Lincoln indicates clearly that he didn't give a rat's a$$ about the slaves; he was trying to preserve the "Union". (in other words, his cash cow!) The Emancipation Proclamation didn't come out until the war was almost over. The "issue" of slavery was used to bolster recruitment in the north.
3. The South did not/does not have a "corner" on racisim, and to associate the Stars and Bars with it quite simply ignores history.

Taken from F***theSouth.com (I am not saying I agree with what this person wrote, but it sure brought the enragement when I wanted to harass the people I used to work with from GA so why not break it out here):

Fawk the South. Fawk 'em. We should have let them go when they wanted to leave. But no, we had to kill half a million people so they'd stay part of our special Union. Fighting for the right to keep slaves - yeah, those are states we want to keep.

And now what do we get? We're the ****ing Arrogant Northeast Liberal Elite? How about this for arrogant: the South is the Real America? The Authentic America. Really?

Cause we fawking founded this country, a**holes. Those Founding Fathers you keep going on and on about? All that bull**** about what you think they meant by the Second Amendment giving you the right to keep your assault weapons in the glove compartment because you didn't bother to read the first half of the fawking sentence? Who do you think those wig-wearing lacy-shirt sporting revolutionaries were? They were fawking blue-staters, dickhead. Boston? Philadelphia? New York? Hello? Think there might be a reason all the fawking monuments are up here in our backyard?

No, No. Get the fawk out. We're not letting you visit the Liberty Bell and fawking Plymouth Rock anymore until you get over your real American selves and start respecting those other nine amendments. Who do you think those fawking stripes on the flag are for? Nine are for fawking blue states. And it would be 10 if those Vermonters had gotten their fawking Subarus together and broken off from New York a little earlier. Get it? We started this ****, so don't get all uppity about how real you are you Johnny-come-lately "Oooooh I've been a state for almost a hundred years" d**kheads. Fawk off.

Arrogant? You wanna talk about us Northeasterners being fawking arrogant? What's more American than arrogance? Hmmm? Maybe horsies? I don't think so. Arrogance is the fawking cornerstone of what it means to be American. And I wouldn't be so fawking arrogant if I wasn't paying for your fawking bridges, bitch.

All those Federal taxes you love to hate? It all comes from us and goes to you, so shut up and enjoy your fawking Tennessee Valley Authority electricity and your fancy highways that we paid for. And the next time Florida gets hit by a hurricane you can come crying to us if you want to, but you're the ones who built on a fawking swamp. "Let the Spanish keep it, it’s a s**thole," we said, but you had to have your fawking orange juice.

The next d**kwad who says, "It’s your money, not the government's money" is gonna get their a** kicked. Nine of the ten states that get the most federal fawking dollars and pay the least... can you guess? Go on, guess. That’s right, motherfawker, they're red states. And eight of the ten states that receive the least and pay the most? It’s too easy, a**hole, they’re blue states. It’s not your money, a**holes, it’s fawking our money. What was that Real American Value you were spouting a minute ago? Self reliance? Try this for self reliance: buy your own fawking stop signs, a**holes.

Let’s talk about those values for a fawking minute. You and your Southern values can bite my a** because the blue states got the values over you fawking Real Americans every day of the week. Which state do you think has the lowest divorce rate you marriage-hyping dickwads? Well? Can you guess? It’s fawking Massachusetts, the fawking center of the gay marriage universe. Yes, that’s right, the state you love to tie around the neck of anyone to the left of Strom Thurmond has the lowest divorce rate in the fawking nation. Think that’s just some aberration? How about this: 9 of the 10 lowest divorce rates are fawking blue states, a**hole, and most are in the Northeast, where our values suck so bad. And where are the highest divorce rates? Care to fawking guess? 10 of the top 10 are fawking red-a** we're-so-fawking-moral states. And while Nevada is the worst, the Bible Belt is doing its fawking part.

But two guys making out is going to fawking ruin marriage for you? Yeah? Seems like you're ruining it pretty well on your own, you little bastards. Oh, but that's ok because you go to church, right? I mean you do, right? Cause we fawking get to hear about it every year at election time. Yes, we're fascinated by how you get up every Sunday morning and sing, and then you're fawking towers of moral superiority. Yeah, that's a workable formula. Maybe us fawking Northerners don't talk about religion as much as you because we're not so busy sinning, hmmm? Ever think of that, you self-righteous a**holes? No, you're too busy erecting giant stone tablets of the Ten Commandments in buildings paid for by the fawking Northeast Liberal Elite. And who has the highest murder rates in the nation? It ain't us up here in the North, a**holes.

Well this gravy train is fawking over. Take your liberal-bashing, federal-tax-leaching, confederate-flag-waving, holier-than-thou, hypocritical bs and shove it up your a**.

And no, you can't have your fawking convention in New York next time.
I tried to edit it as best as I could to make it G-Rated for the JU crowd.
