New lake trout record in Colorado

GUNNISON, Colo. -- During the 40 years Don Walker has fished at Blue Mesa Reservoir he's caught plenty of big lake trout, but none measured up to the one he caught on May 23.

Walker, 61, now holds the record for the biggest lake trout caught in Colorado: The fish weighed 50 pounds, 5 ounces, and measured 44 1/4 inches long.

The record lake trout, also known as a Mackinaw, weighed nearly 4 pounds more than the previous record lake trout caught in 2003 that weighed 46 pounds 14 ounces and measured 42 1/2 inches long
As a side note.....Blue Mesa is the largest reservior in Colorado at 41,972 acres.
He caught this thing on 12lb. test.

anyone see that show on Discover, TLC, or one of those channels with the monster fish. I think that might be the name of the show....Monster Fish. Show people catching, well, really big fish.

I can't even imagine trying to reel in a 50 pound fish.....on 12 pound test.
Not that big of a deal really, just takes a little longer.

We catch a lot of fish here on light tackle. Just need a reel with enough line and a lot of patience.

I've never fished for lake trout though, do they tend to head into structure to break the line off?

Not really sure on the heading into structure thing, but it seems plausible.
Most of the lake trout(big ones anyway) stay very, very deep, so there are lots if things to run into. :agree:

Wow, that's a big trout. I wouldn't eat it because it's a record, but I think it would still make me nervous eating something that is that abnormal. Does Col have any Nuclear power plants?
