Dryer Died...

fawk... guy came over... opened up the top of the dryer (that is access to everything) reclosed it, and it worked... so he figured he was done, and he left. :banghead: By the time my Dad called and told me the guy was gone and it was too late to get him back... sure enough I came home and it's the exact same problem... I tried it 10 times and 8 times it didn't work, twice it started...

Called back - next appointment is Monday.

This time I opened the thing up, read the little booklet, pulled the diagnostic code- door actuator not responding or taking too long to close- basically, as a top loading dryer- this has a door that slides around the cylinder before it starts spinning- but most of the time this door isn't quite latching all the way... I took a lot of things apart and put it back- there's some deformed metal 'springs' that don't look like traditional round springs but are springy none the less... The remedy in the manual for this problem is to replace the door actuator...

Now do I call back the appliance place and tell them that- more then likely they won't care...

Only thing is... dad said the tech had a terrible speech impettiment... he speeks like "m mm m mm m m mm m m m machhhhhh machhinneeeeeee" so I can't really express my views at loudly, boldly, and directly as I would with someone who didn't have such an obvious problem.

I wonder should I just buy a new fricken washer? Something that has a 2 year manufaturers warranty- probably be had for less then $1 a day over 2 years and any time it lasts after that is just extra.

The front loading Whirlpool/Kenmore design they used for 35 years was the ultimate in reliable and servicable dryers. With a $35 rebuild kit every 15 years it'll last forever. The similar Maytag was a close second.

You guys are pansies. As long as it's out of warranty, just open up the machine and fix it yerself. My Maytag's been making threatening to throw a shoe noises in the past few weeks so I tore into it myself. Some of the plastic collar stiffeners from my husband's dress shirts had worked themselves out of the tumbler and into the felt gasket on the front. The gasket was torn so the tumbler was walking around inside it's mounts. I ordered new gaskets on Sunday online and will be putting them in today or tomorrow once they arrive.

So easy a girl can do it.
Fixing your own appliances is for poor people.

They usually carry everything they need to fix that stuff on the truck.....They seem to deal with the same issues over and over again.

Be glad you have the warranty.....My refrigerator had a solenoid go out for the freezer side. I was out of town and it was just my wife so I called to have someone come and fix it....$200+ for a damn solenoid that cost $10 and 5 minutes of effort to fix....I was not pleased.

*Edit oh crap you bought Fisher & Paykel nope they aren't likely to have the parts on hand. Sorry should have bought mainstream appliance.
having an account at small appliance wholesaler FTMFW :agree:

I think they're still using that design, not sure. The way the front panel pops off and the drum lifts out make them very easy to service. Every internal part comes out with a couple of screws, or just unsnaps.
