Until he started talking about remodeling that $1.7 mil house's kitchen with pressboard cabinets....:slapz:
Didn't see that, I just saw the landscaping episode.

But the fact still remains he is much better at remodeling than he is at rapping.

It is highly common to find cabinet boxes made out of particle board in ridiculously expensive houses. Particle board, mdf, and plywood are the three materials used for cabinet boxes. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and really depends on the cabinet maker and what the property owners want.

Well HE is the owner and looking to flip and was talking about a 50k budget on the kitchen. For that $ no way would I expect anything other than solid wood.

My mom's remodel was done for less than half that with real wood cabinets

I agree with you, when I think high end, my first thought is wood (plywood boxes and stock doors/drawers), but really, particle board or mdf boxes, with stock doors/drawers are equally high end. It is more application specific. I have spent a lot of time reading/researching for my cabinets, and the pro's seem to work equally with all three, just depends. FWIW, Im not arguing with you, just tossing out some of the info I have picked up. A few months ago, I would have said "particle board, no way", but it does have its place.

"real wood" cabinets are made with plywood boxes (maple plywood, cherry plywood, etc), and the doors/drawer faces are solid stock to match. But plywood has a tendency to bow and warp, leading to boxes that arent perfectly square. You also have more waste because you have to deal with the grain orientation. Particle board and mdf dont have warping issues, nor do they have grain orientation. Mdf is really heavy though, and both could have problems if they get wet. Although water can also cause plywood to separate. Particle board can come with pretty much any finish you can think up, it is just a veneer that is very durable and easy to clean. Although if you do damage it, repairs are noticeable. Mdf is a great surface for accepting paint.
