Thoughts on Xterra

Jays89YJ said:
I've actually looked at a sh*tload of Xterras over the past week. I'm trying to put my little sister in a dependable SUV or car that has 4WD or AWD. Tomorrow I'm looking at a super charged Xterra for sh*ts 'n giggles. So far I like them more than any other Asian SUV I've looked at for my sister. I've only been looking at automatics since my sister can't drive a gearshift worth a damn. Have you liked what you've seen so far? What have you heard about reliability and engine/transmission life expectancy?
1 car. Subaru Legacy wagon.

FACT.

Find one with the 2.2, and you will NOT kill that motor/trans combo.

Unless you have strangely short legs, excellent low-light vision, and a great tolerance for an irritating lack of power, I hope you're looking at the '05+ Xterra. The old one has a door panel and console that will rub your knees raw within 30 minutes, guages that are about 30 feet down a dark tunnel, and one of the most pathetic power-to-weight ratios since the 2.5L XJs. It's an awful time. Would probably be a good vehicle for a chick, since they're normally short (eliminating the leg problem) and place looks over function (eliminating the horrible lack of power problem,) but not for most guys. The '05+, however, is AWESOME. That new 4L is tons of fun, they carved out the door panel and slimmed the console, and it's longer and wider adding even more room. Add to that the cool plastic cargo area and other nifty features, and it's the most appealing mid-size SUV in my eyes.

If you're considering the old one, I urge you to take it for a test drive that lasts an hour or so if they'll let you. You'll find your ass is asleep, at least one of your knees has a sore spot, and you're worn out from shifting your legs back and forth. The ergonomics are just terrible for anyone over 5'5".
Truth! I test drove an 03 with 7,500K (yes, 7500) for 15 and I didn't feel right sitting in it...the seat went far enough back but the dash still raped you and you felt claustriphobic due to the narrow width of the passenger's seating are in these things!

Go look at the 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner (96-02). Bit pricier, but a nice truck. The '01 and '02 all have full time 4WD with VSC, etc. The 99 and 00 Limiteds had full time 4WD and from 96-00 on any model you could get an electric rear locker.

I had a 2000 (as did GregWJs), but I do like my WJ a LOT more. WJ is far more comfortable in regular driving, has tons more power, and lots more features. But if you're looking for Japanese, the 4Runners are pretty good. Mine wasn't as reliable as I would have expected

It isn't that I'm looking Jap. I just don't feel attracted to any SUV on the market other than the Xterra and Land Rovers. I won't say the cars I am looking between because you all hate GM and the other isn't one that anyone on here likes either. Both of those seem SO far ahead of the Xterra though. I think I want back into a low-to-the-ground, better MPG car for a while.

Those have been considerations as well as the Impreza 2.5RS. Also looked at 3rd Gen 4 Runners, but trying to find one in the price range without a ton of miles is difficult, unless it's wailed to piss.

If she wasn't such a PITA about Jeeps, she'd be in one already. :naw:

Go buy a truck.

Agreed. A truck is eleventybillion times better than any SUV.

And as far as SUVs go, really and truly, the only SUV on teh road today worth owning is the Ford Excursion.

:puzzled: Go test drive a new Xterra. Do now!

STAY AWAY FROM A 2.5 BEFORE 1999. Head gaskets WILL blow in under 100K.
Plus, they have the Phase 1 motor, pre 99, and are generally regarded as **** on a stick by the Subaru guys.

Xterra's are ok if you are young. I wish I would see some out, modded out doing trials. I usually see them with bikes on bike:rolleyes:

Land Rover Discovery's are good looking rigs...but i've never heard anything good about them. I was debating between a 94-97 Disco and an XJ (prices are pretty close on both)...although i'd already leaned towards XJ...i couldn't find a single person to support purchasing a Disco. There was more than a couple people that recommended buying two...one for a DD, the other for a parts vehicle. They have a pretty crappy reliability rating too.

I would like a Range Rover......maybe that will be my next vehicle. I considered it at my last purchase but just could not justify the price v specifications.

Status symbol...that is all ;). Range Rovers were given much higher marks in reliability than their lower line...Land Rover. Apparently you get what you pay for out of the UK.

They're OK. My neighbor is kind of a LR nut, he's got a disco and D90. I was impressed what the disco could do in Moab on a small lift and 32s.

Guy I know had a 04 Disco that he recently got rid of. The final straw was the horn coming on without him pressing the button and honking continuously until he pulled over and yanked a fuse. :naw:

g wagon all the way. :agree:
I've never seen one of those on a trail or even the slightest bit dirty, and that's the only photo I've seen of one wheeling. :clapping:

The guy who did my eyes had one all chromed out. He drove it on alternate days, paired with a similarly-blinged-out H1.
