OK, basically what I had to do was turn the rign about 180 degrees between two spirals of the spring... Do that it slides right off... do it again it goes right back on.

I don't know what I did, but I visualized what I would do if I could straighten the spring... ultimately it would just be a long piece of metal with a loop on each end...
2 seconds later, not even sure what I did, it popped right off!
How could I not have even come across it accidently earlier?

It wasn't that simple... without the "flip" of the ring it would never have come off.KoolBreeze said:you almost have me believing that you really had trouble figuring it out.
the solution was revealed in this post:
you can visualize it and there's no "trick" holding you back.
for that matter... you could've rotated the ring in the direction of the curved yellow arrow, keeping it at the same angle etc and just set it down and it would've been seperated from the spring, laying under it.
