Last year I was in West Virginia and you could buy the 151 proof but they didn't sell the 190 proof. Anyone know about OH?

And yeah, Everclear is WT as hell, but I think that's part of the appeal of it. The stuff makes great jello shots though.
no to OH only 151

I've had Spring Clear here in Oregon, which is the knock off version of everclear. Try taking shots of that! Wow, biggest mistake of my life.

Oregon is pretty uptight about selling alcohol though.

Apparently the 190 proof is still available in Jersey:

Last summer West Virginia banned the 190 proof although the 151 proof is still available there. I've been told that Maryland just passed a similar bill.

And regarding the question of why such strong liquor, this stuff is cheap and strong and its strength means you can use less of it when mixing things. For example Jello shots...you can use vodka but if you use grain like everclear you only need half as much. Why use up your good vodka or other expensive liquor for mixing stuff when you can use cheap grain in less quantity? And this stuff has pretty much no flavor which is desirable in many mixed drinks. It's not for drinking straight, though. Doing so is brutal.
