I would guess mechanical failure over pilot error. They aren't going to put a $1billion+ aircraft in the hands of a jackass that can't manage their situational awareness (ex. know which engine to throttle down to idle in the event of engine issues...C-5 crash at Dover, DE).

And just sometimes, the flaps are INDICATED as 'down', but they're not :eek:

On the other hand, since nobody can truly explain why a flying wing doesn't just fall out of the sky, and the whole bird is 'fly-by-wire' like an Airbus, an electronic glitch can easily screw-up the control surfaces.



What I find amazing is that the ejection seats are so damned effective and reliable.
Even at 10ft altitude or upsidedown at less than 100 ft., when the user punches-out that thing GOES.

Good guess, but I'm betting it was a maintenance f-up. The last time a B-2 kissed concrete it was from a maintenance screw up if I remember correctly.

Crash...yes. Mishap...most likely not. I'm pretty sure i've heard of one mishap involving a B-2. There are different classes of mishap (A, B, C, if memory serves me correctly) that escalate based on the dollar figure of the damgage involved and whether or not there were any injuries or deaths as a result of the mishap.

It could have been another aircraft, but I want to say there was a B-2 jacked up for repairs and a maintainer failed to lock down one of the landing gear, causing the aircraft to kiss the ground (when it was lowered).

There's a "non retribution" policy for accident investigation boards to ensure that all parties involved disclose the full detail of what led up to the events. Would they be treated as a hero or dishonorably discharged? No. Depending on what happened (ex. distracted by issues at home that led to decreased situational awareness), I would imagine the AF wouldn't rush them back into the cockpit.

IMO it's a good policy. Otherwise, the people involved would have no motivation to give accurate information if something they did contributed to the incident (ex. failure to get proper "crew rest" or "get home itis").
