Thoughts on Xterra

I have fished with the idea. I don't think I want another sport ute as I won't be getting rid of the Jeep. I learned my lesson about Jeeps, so a WJ is out of the question. Xterra is really the only thing I can think of wanting that is not a car (non-SUV, van, truck).

Depends what you're going to use it for. If you're going offroad, I'd take a Grand Cherokee over the Nissan. On road, who cares. If you get an Xterra, get the blower engine because all previous versions are pigs.

This is the sort of feedback I want. I am not using it off road as I have the YJ to destroy after winter. No purchases will be made until after February as that would be financial suicide.

You obviously don't know much about the new Xterras. They have a new 4.0l V6 with 265 hp and 284 lb ft of torque. They also offer a pretty impressive NISMO offroad package. I'd wheel a new Xterra or even a H3 before the new POS WK.

They destroed the offroad ability of the GC. You ever look at the approach angle of one of those?

I would also take a new Xterra over a WK. When I say "Grand Cherokee" I am talking about a ZJ or WJ not IFS crap. Is the 4.0L not supercharged? I was thinking that it is.

I have a 05 Frontier with the 4.0L. It's all aluminum. No supercharger and it's freaking powerful. I can chirp the tires in 3rd and it's a four door 4x4 model. I almost bought the xterra but i wanted a truck. Best bang for the buck of any SUV/Truck in it's class...plus i've gotten 25mpg before on a trip to LA with my 6 speed manual.

I've actually looked at a sh*tload of Xterras over the past week. I'm trying to put my little sister in a dependable SUV or car that has 4WD or AWD. Tomorrow I'm looking at a super charged Xterra for sh*ts 'n giggles. So far I like them more than any other Asian SUV I've looked at for my sister. I've only been looking at automatics since my sister can't drive a gearshift worth a damn. Have you liked what you've seen so far? What have you heard about reliability and engine/transmission life expectancy?

Unless you have strangely short legs, excellent low-light vision, and a great tolerance for an irritating lack of power, I hope you're looking at the '05+ Xterra. The old one has a door panel and console that will rub your knees raw within 30 minutes, guages that are about 30 feet down a dark tunnel, and one of the most pathetic power-to-weight ratios since the 2.5L XJs. It's an awful time. Would probably be a good vehicle for a chick, since they're normally short (eliminating the leg problem) and place looks over function (eliminating the horrible lack of power problem,) but not for most guys. The '05+, however, is AWESOME. That new 4L is tons of fun, they carved out the door panel and slimmed the console, and it's longer and wider adding even more room. Add to that the cool plastic cargo area and other nifty features, and it's the most appealing mid-size SUV in my eyes.

If you're considering the old one, I urge you to take it for a test drive that lasts an hour or so if they'll let you. You'll find your ass is asleep, at least one of your knees has a sore spot, and you're worn out from shifting your legs back and forth. The ergonomics are just terrible for anyone over 5'5".

Eric: I have thought about that, but I never would buy a first year of a new body anything, let alone Jap car.

Brandon: I will be looking at 01-4 as I won't want to go stretching my budget into something I can't afford. I'll be test driving all winter and see what I see fit.
